Collision and spawn
Where the player can walk, and where they arrive.
Automatic collision
With Objects block movement automatically turned on (the default, in the Collision and Objects panels):
- Tiles painted on the Objects layer block movement, except walkable ones like flowers and small decorations.
- Water on the Ground layer blocks movement.
- The Above layer never blocks.
- Erasing an object makes the tile walkable again.
- Emerald tiles bring their own rules from the game: trees and walls block, water is surfable, ledges jump, ice slides and arrow tiles push, wherever you paint them. Their tall grass also paints the map's first wild Pokémon zone under it. See Emerald tilesets.
Turn it off when you want to paint objects without touching collisions, for example to fix a map by hand.
Painting collision by hand
Select the Collision layer (4). Blocked tiles show in red. Paint with the Brush, Rectangle or Fill tool to block, and with the Eraser to open.
Common fixes:
- Make the bottom row of a house walkable except for the walls, and leave the door open.
- Block the edges of cliffs and ledges.
- Block invisible walls at the edge of the map where trees don't reach.
Tile behaviors
The Collision panel has more brushes than Blocked. Each one gives tiles a behavior, drawn on the map with its own color and arrow while the Collision layer is selected:
| Brush | What the tile does |
|---|---|
| Ledge ↓ ↑ ← → | Walking onto it in the arrow's direction jumps over it, landing on the tile beyond. It can't be climbed from any other side. |
| Surf | Deep water. Crossed by surfing once a Pokémon in the party is Water type. The first step in says "Mudkip used Surf!" and the player rides it. |
| Ice | The player slides the way they were going until something stops them, or they slide off the ice. |
| Push ↑ ↓ ← → | Pushes the player along in the arrow's direction until they reach a normal tile. Chain them to make spinning-tile puzzles. |
| Counter | Whoever stands behind it is talked to across it, like a Poké Mart clerk or a Nurse. Emerald's counter tiles have it already. |
Paint them with the Brush, Rectangle or Fill tool like blocked tiles. The Eraser clears both blocked tiles and behaviors.
Tips:
- Ledges: paint them on the ledge tiles of a route, so players can hop down a shortcut but have to take the long way back. The landing tile must be free.
- Surf: paint it on the water itself. Water is usually blocked already, and surfing ignores that. Keep the shore walkable so players can get off. People and Pokémon of the map never walk onto water or ledges.
- Ice and push tiles make the tile walkable when painted. Leave a blocked tile or a normal tile where the player should stop.
What else blocks the player
- People block the tile they stand on. People who wander move around their starting tile, up to two tiles away.
- Story gates block until their step is done. See Story and events.
- Pokémon on the map block their tile too.
- Signs don't block. A new sign gets a sign post under it, which does.
- Item balls block their tile until they're picked up. Hidden items don't block.
Spawn
Select the Spawn layer (9) and click a tile. Visitors start there facing down. Each interior has its own spawn too, used when a door leads into it without a matching door back.
Players who lose all their Pokémon also come back to the spawn of the map they're on.
