Make your first game
A full walkthrough, from an empty town to a published game with a Professor, a rival, a gym and a road that opens at the end.
New here? Start with the tour
The first time you open the editor, a short tour walks you through naming your town, painting a path, adding someone, giving them a line and talking to them in Play. It takes about two minutes. Open it again anytime from the city menu: Getting started tour.
This guide builds a complete little game called Mistwood Town. It takes about half an hour and touches almost every feature. Here is the plan:
- The player wakes up at home. The roads out of town are closed.
- The Professor in the Lab lets them choose a first Pokémon, and the roads open.
- On the route south, wild Pokémon live in the tall grass and a Youngster wants to battle.
- The rival shows up and challenges them. A Hiker blocks the gym until the rival is beaten.
- The Gym Leader gives the Mist Badge, and a boulder blocking the way north is gone.
Test as you go
Press Play after each part. If a step is already done and you want to try it again, open the Story layer and press Restart my progress.
Part 1: the town
Create the city
Open the city menu (the arrow next to the city name) and choose New city. Name it Mistwood Town and pick Starter town. You get trees around the edge, two paths that lead out on every side (where routes can join), a Pokémon Center with a Nurse inside, the player's house with their room upstairs, the Professor's Lab, a sign and a patch of tall grass.
Make room for a route
Open City settings from the city menu. Set the size to 40 × 60 and press Resize. The town stays at the top and new grass appears below it: that's where the route goes. The gates that closed the bottom path now sit in the middle of the map: open the Story layer and erase them there, then paint new ones across the path at the bottom of town.
Where the player starts
Under City settings → New game, new players start in the Player's room, upstairs in their house. Write the Professor's welcome in Professor's welcome if you like: a new player hears it before the game starts.
Part 2: the story
The starter town's story already has a first step, Get your first Pokémon: gates close every way out of town until the Professor hands the player a Pokémon.
Add two steps
Select the Story layer (6) and press Add step twice. Rename them:
- Beat your rival
- Win the Mist Badge
Block the way north with a boulder
Click step 3, choose Object and Boulder, and paint gates across the north exit of the town. Change the message to something like “A huge boulder. The Gym Leader said they would move it for champions.”
Part 3: the Professor
Meet him
Under Maps in the side panel, click Pokémon Lab, select the People layer (8) and click the Professor. His Script lets the player choose Treecko, Torchic or Mudkip (Choose a starter), then completes Get your first Pokémon. It plays once; after that he says his Dialogue.
Make him your own
Change his Name to Professor Birch and the Pokémon in Choose a starter to the three you want. Add a Give item after it, with 5 Poké Balls, so the player can catch Pokémon right away.
Try it
Click Outside under Maps, then press Play. You wake up in your room. The paths out of town are closed. Go to the Lab, choose your partner, and walk back out: the way is open.
Part 4: the route
Paint the route
Below the town, use the Sand path or Light grass terrain to draw a winding path. Line it with Tree stamps. Add a few patches of Tall grass (wild Pokémon): this stamp paints the grass and its encounter zone at the same time.
Pick the wild Pokémon
Select the Encounters layer (5). The Tall grass zone already has Zigzagoon, Wurmple, Poochyena and Ralts at levels 2 to 5. Change them if you like: type a name in the Pokémon box and set the level range. Keep the Encounter rate around 10 to 15%.
Add a route trainer
Select People and click an empty tile next to the path. Name them Youngster Joey, pick the youngster look, set Role to Trainer and face them across the path. Give them one Pokémon, like Zigzagoon at level 5. Trainers see 4 tiles in front of them and walk up to the player when they spot them.
Part 5: the rival and the gym
Add the rival
Back in town, add a person called Wally. Set Role to Trainer with a team of two Pokémon around level 6 and 7. In Story:
- Shows up: 1. Get your first Pokémon, so they arrive after the Lab.
- Beating them completes: 2. Beat your rival.
- Says afterwards: “I'll get stronger, just you wait!”
Build the gym
Place a House stamp where the gym should be. Select Doors, click its door and choose + New gym. The gym comes with a Gym Leader who has a Geodude and a Nosepass.
Tune the Gym Leader
Open the gym and click the leader. Lower the team to around levels 9 and 11 so a player who caught a few Pokémon on the route can win. Check Gym leader is ticked and set Badge name to Mist Badge. In Story, set Beating them completes to 3. Win the Mist Badge.
Guard the gym door
Go back outside, select the Story layer and click step 2. Choose Blocked by → Person and press Place a person in the way. Click the tile in front of the gym door. A Hiker appears there. Press Edit to change their dialogue to “The Gym Leader only sees trainers who beat their rival.” They walk away once step 2 is done.
Visit the Pokémon Center
The starter town's Pokémon Center already has a door: press Play, walk into it and talk to the Nurse across the counter to heal the party. Buildings you add yourself get one the same way: select Doors, click the building's door and pick a room under Leads to, like + New Pokémon Center or + New Poké Mart.
Part 6: finish and share
Add a reward for the end
Outside, add a person near the boulder with Shows up set to 3. Win the Mist Badge and the dialogue “You did it! The road north is open.”
Play it from the start
In the Story layer press Restart my progress, then Play and go through the whole game. Check that every gate holds, every trainer can be beaten, and the player can always get back to a Nurse.
