Where is my town saved?

The badge next to the city name in the top bar always tells you:

BadgeWhat it means
SavedIn your account. Click it to see your cities.
LiveIn a live room, saved for everyone as you build.
Only on this deviceYou're logged out, so it's only in this browser. Click it to log in.
Save to accountYou're logged in, but this town isn't in your account yet. Click it to save it there.

While you build logged out, DreamMist reminds you once per visit, at the bottom of the map, that your town only lives in this browser.

Starting a new town

New city in the city menu saves the town you're on first, then opens the new one. Your old town stays in Your cities. When you're logged in, the new town goes straight into your account. When you're logged out, the dialog warns you that both towns are only in this browser, with a button to log in first.

Logging in

Press Log in in the top bar and continue with Google. Your username comes from your Google name and is shown on cities you publish.

The sign-in window explains why you're being asked, for example when you publish, invite builders or ask for a short link, then lets you continue with Google.

After you log in:

  • Your trainer: the first time, the trainer from this browser is saved to your account. If your account already has a trainer, that one is used instead.
  • Your towns: if this browser has towns that aren't in your account, Bring your towns along lists them, all ticked. Save them all, pick some, or choose Not now. You can bring them later from your account panel, which reminds you how many are still only in this browser.

Log out from your account panel asks first. Your towns stay in your account, and the copies in this browser stay too.

An account can keep up to 50 cities online.

Version history

For towns saved online, the city menu has Version history. A copy of your town is kept as you build, at most every 30 minutes, and the last 20 copies are kept. Pick one and press Restore to bring your town back to how it was then. What's there before you restore is kept as a copy too, so a restore can be undone the same way. You can't restore while building together in a live room.

Towns saved only in this browser have no version history: use undo, or export a .json backup.

Your cities

Open Your cities from the city menu to see:

  • On this device: cities saved in this browser. Open or delete them, or save one to your account.
  • Online: cities in your account. Deleting one also stops its share links from working.

Export and import

  • Export .json (city menu or Share) downloads the whole city: every map, person, story step, door, tileset and music link.
  • Import file in Your cities opens a .json file as a new city.
  • Export image downloads a PNG of the current map at full size. Great for previews and posting your map.

See City file format for what's inside the .json file.
