Story recipes
Copy-ready patterns for quests, blocked paths, rivals, rewards and endings.
Each recipe uses only the Story layer and a person's Story settings. To learn what each setting does, see Story and events.
The Professor gives you a Pokémon
The player gets a second partner at the start of the game.
- Add a step Meet the Professor.
- Add the Professor. In Story, set Talking completes to Meet the Professor.
- In Reward, pick the Pokémon and its level, for example Ralts at level 5.
- In Says afterwards: “Take good care of it!”
The reward is given once per player. If the party already has six Pokémon, it goes to the PC box.
Cut the small tree
A tree blocks a shortcut until the player has met someone.
- Add a step Learn Cut. Choose Blocked by → Object → Small tree.
- Paint gate tiles where the tree should stand.
- Add a person who completes Learn Cut with the dialogue “Here, I'll teach your Pokémon how to cut small trees.”
- Set the step's message to “A small tree. Maybe it could be cut down…”
The sleeping Snorlax
A Snorlax blocks the road. The player can battle it, catch it, and then the road is open.
- Select the People layer, choose the Pokémon tab, and click the middle of the road.
- Click its image and pick Snorlax. Set its level to 30.
- Under When the player talks to it, choose Wild battle.
- Write the message “Snorlax is fast asleep… It woke up!”
Once beaten or caught, Snorlax is gone and the road is free. To open more of the map at the same time, add a step and set Snorlax's Beating or catching it completes to it.
A legendary at the end
- Build a small room behind a locked door or a story gate.
- Place a Pokémon with a Wild battle, like Latias at level 40.
- Set its Shows up to the last step of your story, so it only appears at the end.
The guard who wants a badge
A person stands in the road and only moves once the gym is beaten.
- Add a step Win the badge. Choose Blocked by → Person.
- Press Place a person in the way and click the road.
- Press Edit on the new person. Give them the dialogue “Only trainers with a badge may pass.”
- Set the Gym Leader's Beating them completes to Win the badge.
The guard fades away right after the badge is earned.
The rival who shows up later
- Add a rival with Role → Trainer.
- Set Shows up to the step before the rival's scene, for example Meet the Professor.
- Optionally set Beating them completes to a step like Beat your rival and use it to open the next area.
Trainers who show up later still spot the player from 4 tiles away, so place them where the player will walk past.
A trainer who isn't ready yet
A Gym Leader who won't battle until the player has done something else.
- Set the leader's Needs first to a step like Beat your rival.
- Write Says until then: “Come back when you've proven yourself!”
Until that step is done, the leader doesn't spot the player and says the waiting line when spoken to.
A chain of tasks
Make the player do things in order: get a parcel, deliver it, receive a reward.
- Add steps Get the parcel and Deliver the parcel.
- The shopkeeper completes Get the parcel.
- The Professor Needs first Get the parcel and completes Deliver the parcel, with a reward of 10 Poké Balls.
Steps are only finished by the person who completes them. Needs first is what keeps them in order.
Someone who leaves town
A person who's there at the start and gone later, like a Mom who goes to the market.
- Set Leaves to the step after which they're gone.
Combine it with Shows up on a second copy of the person somewhere else to make them “move” across the map.
A message that changes
A villager says one thing before a step and another after it, without being part of the quest themselves.
- Set Needs first to the step.
- Write the line before it in Says until then, and the line after it in Dialogue.
When the person completes their own step, use Says afterwards instead: Dialogue is said the first time, Says afterwards every time after.
A road that opens at the end
- Add a final step like Become champion, blocked by a Boulder object.
- Paint the gates across the exit.
- The last trainer completes it.
- Add a person who Shows up after it to congratulate the player and point to the open road.
A secret area
- Paint a dead end with trees, and a gap hidden under an Above layer tree top.
- Leave the gap walkable on the Collision layer.
- Put a reward giver or a rare encounter zone behind it.
Players who explore find it, everyone else walks past.
A door that opens later
Paint story gates on the tile in front of a door. The door can't be reached until the step is done, so it works for locked gyms, caves and secret rooms.
